Save Money with Senior Discounts

Are you ready to be labeled as a senior yet? I have to admit I am having a little trouble with the label as at times it can feel patronizing. Depending on who is saying it, it can come across as disrespectful, implying a loss of vitality or mental decline. Part of the problem is just me, I feel as if I am 40 year old somehow stuck in a 60 year old’s body.

Qualifying for senior discounts depends on where you are shopping. The bar starts low at age 50 with some clothing retailers. It goes up to age 55 for some restaurants and housing communities. More commonly you will see discounts starting 60+. You may feel a bit sheepish at first when asking for a senior discount, but when prices are so high, it is hard not to ask for a lower rate. There are plenty of discounts available to our age group and these retailers are used to being asked for them on a daily basis, so why not? Save where you can, when you can.

The challenge with senior discounts in 2026 is that many are no longer chain-wide. Restaurants, retailers, and travel companies increasingly leave discount decisions to franchise owners or individual store locations. The discounts you see on the list below may work for some folks, but may not be honored in your area. The best rule of thumb is to check if there is a senior discount available before ordering or paying. Here’s the list:

AARP - So THIS is what you do with that AARP card! AARP offers senior discounts on insurance, healthcare, travel, and other services. And it fights like crazy in legislation to make sure we don’t lose our Medicare and other services that are going to be critical for our generation.

Amazon Prime Discount - If you have an EBT card (SNAP) or are on Medicaid, you can get 1/2 off your Amazon Prime Membership. This gives you access to movies, television, discounts on its products, fast delivery, photo storage, and more. Use your EBT card to purchase food as well at Amazon Fresh stores. Become an Amazon Prime Member here.

Military Veterans - Thank you for your service! You and your spouse can get a 10% discount at Home Depot.

Discounts can often be combined with loyalty rewards, though they usually cannot be stacked with other coupons. You will soon be able to create your own local list of senior discounts to save you money.
