A remote job is like any other. You have a company that you work for with a specific set of responsibilities, a set amount of pay and benefits, an expected weekly work schedule, and a boss. This is an important distinction as many believe that when you work remotely you are on your own. You are working separately from the rest of your team members however, you still have deliverables, quotas and expectations to meet that are set by your employer and managed by your supervisor.
What do you need to start a remote job?
Most employers require you to have a high-speed internet connection, a computer or laptop, and a smartphone. Depending on the job you may need certain software, a headset, a secure work environment, and a quiet background. No barking dogs, loud TV, or voices in the background if you are speaking directly with customers.
Why would remote employers hire Gen X?
There are employers and industries out there that are looking for seasoned employees. So many times, when we call a company for assistance, we are met with an AI-generated robotic response or an endless loop of prompts that make us shout Agent! There is a growing backlash from consumers, and more companies are rehiring roles that had once been displaced by automation.
The good news? You will be hired because of your age. When working remotely, you need to have life experience and judgement. You also need to prove to your employer that you are productive and not glued to your phone all day. This is not an issue for Gen X and companies know it.

You will have an easier time getting hired if you have experience within the field of the remote work position you are applying for. It is more of a challenge to manage off-site employees so like any other job, a company wants to know that you have the skill set to do the work.

START WITH THE FREE JOB SEARCH BOARDS
You may or may not have had luck in the past finding remote opportunities on job search sites such as Indeed or ZipRecruiter. It may be worth your time bookmarking these sites and going back to them during your job search as they do come up from time to time. I found a great part-time remote position using Indeed that I worked for over two years. Don’t forget to look into your local city, county, and state employment sites too for remote postings.
CONSIDER THE PAY TO PLAY SITES
There are platforms that specialize in legit remote job listings and provide remote work guidance, but they operate differently from most job boards. These remote job search sites only list opportunities and companies that have been vetted as genuine. No scams, no companies that will waste your time. But because there is a manual review and curated job postings, they will have you buy a subscription in order to access full details on the opportunity and access to job applications.
I am on the fence about this one Gen X. I generally don’t like to pay to get access to job applications as there is no guarantee that you will get an offer. But I understand these companies need a way to keep the lights on. Time is money. These companies can do the heavy sifting for you so all you have to do is apply. Here are two sites that I can recommend:
Flexjobs has been around since 2007. They are a job search website that specializes in opportunities that are either hybrid (partly remote/partly on site) or fully remote. They charge you fees to access their job listings. It is a nominal amount $2.95 for a 14-day full access trial, $9.95 per month for 3 months. They do have a 2-week money back guarantee so if you try it and see nothing that you are looking for, no harm done.
Remote.co has been around since 2015. They also use a subscription model for full access to job applications. Some users report that job details and full application processes are behind a paywall requiring membership before you can apply directly. Remote.co listings tend to lean toward mid‑career or professional remote roles rather than low‑effort gigs. Because there’s a focus on remote‑first and hybrid‑ready companies, you’re less likely to see obvious scams. Current pricing is $22/month.

Teaching English online offers great flexibility. You can set your own schedule and work from anywhere with just a reliable internet connection, a laptop, and a headset. You can get started by choosing a platform, earning an accredited TEFL certification, and setting up your virtual classroom.
While some companies do not require it, a 120-hour TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification is the industry standard. It equips you with the methodologies, lesson planning skills, and confidence you need to manage an online classroom and attract students.
